Active X controls

Can it be explained to me, in as simple terms as possible, what active x controls are and what do they do. I have seen it mentioned that certain web pages require them to be able to open but I get the impression that in certain circumstances they can cause problems, which I would want to avoid.

If you have all of the Windows and Internet Explorer patches from Windows Update then you should have no problems, Meshuga.

Some web pages will not work as intended unless you have ActiveX enabled. In Internet Explorer, Tools/Internet OPtions, Security tab, Custom Settings button to change whether ActiveX controls are enabled or not.
