hi i am changing one of my pc internal hard drives from 80g sara to 500g sata what is the smallest external drive i could use for acronis image Chippy

It depends on the size of any Acronis file you wish to store.

Personally I keep the OS drive as small as I can to make backups and restoration as fast and simple as possible.
So if you have a vast drive to back up you will need a similarly vast drive to store it.

Acronis does produce some useful compression but don't expect miracles.

I believe it's less than 12% compression in ‘Normal’ compression mode, which is the default mode

I use Acronis daily and my C drive shows as 19.4 gb in use and a full Acronis image of that is typically around 10 gb.
