Acer TravelMate not starting up

I have an Acer TravelMate 233XC which, about two weeks ago, I formatted and reinstalled XP Home onto. I didn't come across any problems and havbe been using it fine since.

Now, when I switch it on all I get is an internal fan whirring with nothing at all on the screen. I've tried attaching an external monitor (along with pressing F5 to switch monitors) but nothing appears on that either. I've tried starting up from the XP CD but it starts spinning and then stops, again with nothing on the screen, no matter what buttons I press.

What could be wrong?

1. Turn off the computer,
2. Take the battery out
3. Take out the power supply
4. Push the power button down for 30 seconds.
5. Reconnect power supply
6. Then the battery.

Tried that - still no good.
Nothing on the screen and no beeps on startup.
I know the battery's no good and doesn't hold its charge, if that's of any use. The laptop doesn't start up with the battery out either, except for an internal fan running.

Any further ideas please anyone?

Remove hard drive and battery, start on mains only, do you get any beeps of screen messages?

No - no beeps at all.

... and nothing on the screen either.
