Acer Touchpad has died

Help, the Touchpad on my Acer Aspire V5-122 (OS = W8.1)has suddenly stopped working. I have no idea of the reason why. I have taken all the usual steps, including downloading the latest driver from Acer, uninstalling the original and installing the new, but it has no effect. I also tried System Recovery back to when it was working, but there was no change. An ordinary mouse USB or Bluetooth works normally. My Device Manager originally showed 'Synaptics Touchpad V8.2' but now it only shows Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad due to the driver replacement. What next ??
