  mh84 14:28 13 Mar 09

I have an acer laptop with windows XP.

Recently it has start turning its self off or sometimes restarting for no apparent reason. It was doing it about once or twice a week but not has started to do it more often.

Anyone got any ideas as to what is wrong and how to fix?

Overheating is most likely cause.

Get a vacuum cleaner on the grills and make sure all the dust / grime is removed from the vents.

I tried to clean it...seemed pretty dust free but i cleaned it anyway...also used a heardrier!

problems still occurs....I have now taken out the battery and running off the power cable to see if this helps...maybe replace the battery

Anyone else have any thoughts on a solution to this problem?

Removing the battery did not i dont think the battery is at fault...laptop still switches itself off...

have visited the Acer website and am considering updating the bios, but I dont know enough about this to know if that will make any difference? any help would be appreciated!

does the lack of posts on this mean no one has any ideas?

A BIOS flash is last resort as a failure during flash will result in a scrap machine.

Disable auto restart click here and then when it reboots you should be able to see what caused the shut down when you reboot.
