My laptop freezes just after bootup. As soon as I go to click on a icon I get the blue circle and nothing happens. I've tried booting in safe mode but it nakes no difference. I can't open anything, can't get into control panel, can't open my antimalware. Very frustrated!

does anyone have any ideas about what to do?

Its roughly 7 years old, had loads of problems with it in the past but I've managed to scrape through until now.

I'm not the most computer literate however. How do you get into CMD?

Op system?

asuming Vista or windows 7 as its prompting X:>

Do a startup repair from the Advanced menu

  1. Start your PC

  2. If your PC has one operating system Press and Hold the F8 key as your PC starts. If the Windows Logo appear you will need to start again

  3. If you have a dual boot system a Boot option menu will appear. Highlight the Windows operating system and Press the F8 key

  4. An Advanced Tools menu options screen will now appear

  5. Highlight the repair Your Computer option and Press Enter

  6. Select a keyboard layout, and then Click the Next button

  7. Next select your user Name and Enter your Password, then Click OK

  8. The recovery options should now appear

Repair / Recovery Options

  • Startup repair - This automatically fixes problems that are preventing Windows from starting
  • System Restore - This will Restore Windows to an earlier point in time
  • Windows Complete PC Restore (Available in Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions only)- If you don't have a backup then don't use this option This will completely restore your entire PC - programs, system settings and files - from the back up that you have previously created. Any other data will be lost
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - This checks your computer's memory hardware for errors
  • Command Prompt - This opens a Command Window

I've ran a startup repair. I'm slightly further forward as now I can start windows and begin to open programs but shortly after again the full system freezes. I've tried running malwarebytes again but it freezes about 2 mins in and all my windows do not respond.

Where can I go from here?

btw I really appreciate you guys helping.

Boot into safe mode and run your antivirus and antimalware programs from there.
