i have got a acer aspire 3690 in which i have just installed a clean copy ox xp pro. i have installed all the requisite drivers and everything works great except for the lan ethernet network controller which i cannot get to work. i have downloaded the driver from both the acer website and the broadcom website - thet look the same but neither works. i point the add hardware wizard at them but it just says unable to find software. any ideas welcome as its driving me nuts.

I've found version 8.48.0.0 from here. I've downloaded the zip file and scanned with various security software and is OK. Worth a try.

Is it definitely a Broadcom chip?

Is there an Atheros driver listed?

Download SIW or Belarc and run on Acer to identify chip.

ok looking at that now

Have a look at the video here. Similar in XP, just find Device manager and follow the instructions to get to the hardware ID. Copy the second line and paste to notebook and copy to flash drive. Paste the ID to google in a working PC and see what comes up. Be careful with some of these sites that offer drivers , some have some dodgy links, that's why I always scan the downloaded folders.

ethernet lan does not show on belarc because no driver installed of course

the wireless lan (which works) is broadcom and i believe the ethernet lan is too - main processor is intel celeron m430 not sure if that tells me anything

Just paste the ID to google and see what comes up.
