Acer 3634 won't boot

  theapeman 00:38 23 Jul 10

Acer Aspire 3634. Not used for 12 months (don't ask!!), now will not boot. When I try to boot from the recovery disk created when new I get the error message "File viade.sys is corrupted" or "File setupdd.sys" could not be loaded. Alternatively I may get a "code 4" fail or a fail in "rundle.dll" or "ntdll.dll".
Does the variety of error messages mean that the hard disk is dead or is there something else I could try?
The laptop is 4 years old and has not been used much.

File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4 - your ram is defective OR needs to be removed and reseated. - this MAY be applicable in your case.

If you are confident in doing this I would certainly give it a try first.

Many thanks. I had thought that I'd fiddled around and tried all configurations of the memory modules in different slots, but I tried again -and lo: managed to find a dud module!
Very many thanks indeed.
