Accidently got onto a remote network wirelessly

I recently bought a wireless enabled laptop. I havent connected a wireless router to my home PC yet. I switched on the network locater and found a couple of unsecure networks nearby with good signal strengths. I piggybacked on one of them to check that the laptop can surf ok, and it worked fine.

My questions are:-

- Can I easily get caught out doing this?
- Are there stiff penalties for this kind of thing?
- What would this be called? poaching someone's broadband width?

2) Yes.
3) Theft.
