accidently deleted files help

i accidently deleted some films from my external hard drive today is there any way of getting them back?i tried several systemrestores to no avail.the folders are there with the names but they are empty.it took me a long time to get them and i am an ass for not backing them up to dvd.any help please

Thanks buteman, just downloaded and tested that "Recuva" program - appears to work just fine, provided files have not been over-written, obviously.

Any Win 98SE users: note that, although not listed under System Requirements, it DOES WORK on WINDOWS 98SE

thanks buteman i installed the prog but dont seem to be able to find the files they are big avi files i will have another try and post back to let you know thanks again

Sorry about adding a gloomy thought....

If the files were very large you may have had a message saying something like -

"[XYZ] is too large for the recycle bin, do you wish to delete anyway?"

If that happened then I guess any chance of recovery seems very slim.
