Access to wireless networks

I stayed in a hotel abroad recently and my laptop detected an unencrypted wireless network which I tried to connect to. This failed and I got an error message which said 'Limited or no connectivity' - even though the signal strength was high. The morality issue apart, what prevents me from accessing unencrypted setups and is there a way to do this?

You might be able to get on if you are lucky and its not encrypted.

Look for the war chalking signs in the road!

Most these days need a passowrd or summat to get in.
