98SE - No Network Neighborhood Icon

  daba 20:08 14 Mar 04

I am trying to connect a laptop (W2K) to home PC (Win98SE) on ethernet TCP/IP. I am definately using a crossover cable.

All settings seem OK, but neither machine can see the other, and I think the real problem is that networking is not 'enabled' on the 98 PC because there is no network neighborhood icon on the desktop, nor any sight of it in explorer.

Can anyone help pls.

Have you had a look in Start>settings>Control panel?

If not where Valvegrid suggests, then go to

control panel

add / remove programs

click the windows tab

choose to add windows components and check what is there for network.

Ticked off - laptop configuration problem will prevent me from doing what I want, as another protocol needs adding which I can't do.

I will get IT department to fix this for me next week

Thanks anyway guys.
