56k Connection is running like a 28k

In the last 4 days my internet has been going very slow. Im running on a compaq presario 5000 , op windows me , and my modem is conexant HCF V90 56K Data Fax PCI Modem. My internet service is Ntl Home. Ive asked my mate about this problem and he's said that the modem is probally tired and that i should get a new one. I honestly havnt a clue whats wrong with it so can anyone help?

Have you talked to BT to test your line for faults or noise? Assuming you use BT that is.

Tell BT to check for a DACS box on the line.
They had one on my line, and it limited speed to 30kbps and kept dropping out every 1/2 hour,

keep on to BT, they are reluctant to do this (it took me a few months of complaints.
