512 MB being read as 256 MB

I have a HP Pavilion 710 which has a TUSL-L motherboard inside it. It comes with 128 MB of RAM.
I've tried adding three different sticks of 512 MB RAM each in it, and they're all being read as 256 MB.

Why would this be so?

It doesn't matter which of the two slots I put the 512MB RAM into, or whether I put them in by themselves or with each other or withthe original 128 MB stick.

Aha! Thanks for that, brundle.
It seems that each memory bank can hold only a maximum of 256.
