4GB USB dongle

I have just bought a 4GB dongle to replace my smaller ones and for some reason my computer doesn't want to recognise it. It did recognise it ONCE as a Kingston 4G disc but not a short time later. I have tried plugging it into other USB sockets but still no go.
Do the BIOS settings affect it in any way ? I seem to remember that above a certain size, things went pear shaped.
Your help would be appreciated once again please.
Win XP, Dell 8400, 2GB mem.

the size should not matter. the only suggestion I can think of is, to go into device manager, and from there uninstall all usb devices, then reboot, and allow windows to reinstall the drivers.
