3g with router

I live abroad, and ISPs are sparse ( and erratic!)
My 3g is provided by a USB plug in modem, which works reasonably well.

However, I now need to provide internet for someone else in the household, so I purchased a 3g capable router, which I expected to have a USB socket.
It doesn't - only uses the sim card itself.
This would be ok, except the software, on the PC, doesn't acknowledge the router, or get as far as bringing up the pin number screen. The software just sits & sulks while it waits, indefinitely!

Have I bought the wrong sort of router, or is there a way around this prob, please?
