When I log on to my PC, i see that there are 322 messages. What does this mean and can I view or get rid of them?

They are most likely email messages that are in your account. Whic email program are you using?

I use Hotmail, but I suspect it is my son and his messenger account!

To get rid of that message, download and install the Tweak UI Powertoy from click here

Once installed, click on the + symbol next to 'Logon' to expand the menu.

Then click on 'Unread Mail'. Un-tick 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen'. Click Apply.

Start->Run and type in 'Regedit' (without the quotations)

Next, navigate to the key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\<e-mail address>'
Double-click the 'MessageCount' value and set it to 0 (zero). Click OK

That's it. The problem should be solved
