32 bit disk access

OK I should know this one, but I don't and I've searched the knowledgebase and the manufacturer's sites without success. Someone out there will have the answer immediately, I'm sure.

I have two hard drives installed - Master is a Western Digital WD800BB-00DAA3 80gb and the slave is a Maxtor 4D 060H3 60gb. Both are formatted to NTFS under XP home. They share IDE1 with jumpers correctly set.

The question is that my BIOS (AMI) autodetects without a problem but leaves me to choose whether to enable 32bit disk access manually. When I do so, things seem faster but then odd error messages creep in, normally of the "XXXX has encountered an error and needs to close" variety. Is there anything that I need to do apart from selecting 32bit access in the BIOS - indeed, do these drives actually support it? A good link on this would be much appreciated.

System is MSI Board, Intel P4 2.4, 512DDR, XP Home.
