256mb memory showing only as 224mb

I have an Acer 1313 laptop running Windows XP Home which has a 256mb memory module. However, when I check the memory in System Information, it shows only as 224MB. I have tried changing the memory chip, but the same problem remains. When I put both 256MB memory chips in the machine, it only shows as 480MB. Can anyone give me any clues as to why a 256mb memory module is only showing as 224mb and what I can do about it?

It is most likely due to you have "on board graphics" that is using 32MB of your RAM.

reads KB i.e. 1024 b = 1MB or something like that

my memory stick (128mb) properties actually shoew as 127,938,560 bytes (122mb) - so they juggle numbers a bit like when they say you have a 17" monitor and it actually only measures 15 3/4" diagonally - bit of a con I think ;)
