256 RAM not recognised

i have tried to add a 256 RAM to my packard bell desktop 850 processor celeron.tried 5 + 128.non recognised. it has accepted a 64 so i have 128 + 64 installed .any ideas?

Your motherboard might not support 256MB modules, warden11.

from warden11 , the spec says it will take 2 x256

Make sure that the 256 is in the first slot - 64 in the second.

click start\run,type msconfig and click OK.

(win98/ME)go into general\advanced and check to see if it is limiting the amount of RAM available to windows

(winXP)go into 'boot.ini' and check its set to 'maximum'

i have swapped the ram round it makes no difference ,patr100,but thanks
did as you suggested crx16, upped it to 512 and checked the box, no change.
