I bought a new camcorder, and a PCI Card but I have not been able to "Capture video" it works for about 2 seconds then stops capturing. I only have 256mb, could that be the problem?

I would have said no 256 isnt enough for video capture, but i have never done any so i dont know for sure, but it seems like it would be very memory intesive.

you should be able to capture with 256 but 512 is recommended for xp and video capturing

I found 512MB just about sufficient but very slow. I upgraded to 1GB and it is much better.

I would say 256Mb will be particularly painful. You have to remember XP will be hogging a large chunk of that 256MB

I take it the PCI card is Firewire

Is the camcorder running off the internal battery or a mains adapter?

What software?

Thanks for the replies, I thought that I would be OK with 256, but that it would be slow.I have been trying for about a month now with no luck using Windows Movie Maker, Nero, and Photo Express. I am getting nill results from all of them, and I just wondered if I increased the RAM to 512 it might solve my problem. I don't want to spend money upgrading only to find that is not the answer.

it's worth your while upgrading to 512 anyway

  rawprawn 17:32 06 Aug 05

PCI is Firewire and the camera is running from the mains adapter. There was no software with the camera, just a DV out. It's a JVC GR- DF 420

Yes I think you may be right, my machine is nearly 3 years old, and now running XP Pro

If you are, it will use up half of your available RAM just to run properly,as bremner says, and if you have any other programs launched at the time you'll soon run out.

Ideally you should have 1Gb of RAM installed.
