I have run virus check on the problem computer & it is OK (AVG recovery)

Thus my problem is reduced to one PC thatcannot connect to internet although it can connect and interact with a router that is OK for internet.

The IPCONFIG details look OK and you should have internet access. If you use an email program (rather than web-based mail) can you send/receive mail or does that also fail?

If you type 209.85.229.99 directly into your web browser's address bar does anything happen? It should open Google's page.

No e-mail program is used and setting up O/E account resulted in "could not find host."
Direct entry of that Google address brings up Google page, but search from it produces "I/E cannot display page, etc".
That may be a cached page.

Ipconfig "Media Disconnected" report seems odd to me, are you sure the ethernet cable is working and connected properly >
?

cheers HC

Have changed cables (twice with known good and also added new card--now removed)
Ping 127.0.0.1 gives response and PC can ping and connect to router, to see router settings and stats.

>>> Ipconfig "Media Disconnected" report seems odd to me,

The IPCONFIG details showed that there were *two* network adapters installed, one of which was disconnected, but that's not a problem.

>>> Direct entry of that Google address brings up
>>> Google page, but search from it produces "I/E
>>> cannot display page, etc"

That suggests that it could be a DNS issue. Your "alphabetic" URLs aren't being resolved by a DNS server into their IP addresses.

In the TCP/IP settings of your Local Area Connection, leave the IP section to obtain addresses automatically but set the DNS section to "Use the following DNS server addresses" and type in:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

See if that makes any difference.

Thanks, but it had no effect.

(I have removed the second Network card; only fitted it to check.)

However, setting DNS back to obtain automatically and putting numeric IP of two councils into the IE browser got a connection to their page.

(Other numeric IPs produce variable results with reference to page under construction or Apache is installed on the servers)
This is beyond my understanding level.
