My sister-in-law was given a base unit which had Windows 2000 & XP pro SP2 installed, she decided to use XP pro and now some 26 days later XP doesn't work... because it was not registered...Windows 2000 works fine. I suspect XP is an illegal copy. Can anything be retrieved from her XP stuff or is all lost??? She has no XP installation discs. So how can one remove the XP installation..She has the Windows 2000 disc o.k.

If she can boot into Windows 2000 she should be able to find and remove the files in the XP instalation. Was XP loaded onto the same Partition (drive) as Windows 2000.

How many apps did she use on XP? You can recover anything from My Documents, email and address book recovery if she used Outlook Express is easy, but requires a bit of explanation.

Has she tried to activate the copy of XP? Maybe it'll work?

Did she get any discs with it? Does it have a holographic sticker on it with the license key?

She doesn't have a disk...just a handwritten key...she has tried to activate, but it says it is already activated...then says goodbye and shuts down...On reboot if you choose Windows 2000 there are no problems.

Don't know if it was in the same partition or not.
