16 bit MS-DOS subsystem illegal instruction pop-up

  guapa 00:36 09 Sep 06

Each time I open broadband connection the following pops up
C:\Document\Margaret\LOCALS 1\Temp\SURFAI 1.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:00 00 IP:01DeOP:a8 03 00 00 00.
How do I get rid of this?

could be a virus infection - check out with up to date spybot/adaware etc.

Surfai~1.exe is actually short for Surfairy.exe, a piece of adware that has installed itself you your computer. Try looking for "Surfairy" in Add/Remove Programs to get rid of it. If that does not work, try the following procedure:
Open a DOS command prompt window (from Start->Programs->Accessories) and enter the following commands (for the Hlp variant):
cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Surfairy\SurfairyHelp.dll"

Or, for the PP variant:
cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Surfairy\SurfairyPP.dll"

After restarting the computer you should be able to delete the Surfairy folder inside Program Files.

You can also delete the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Surfairy in the registry (Start->Run->regedit) to clean up if you like.
