16 to 8 bits.

My computer has just developed a situation where,
after logging on, the desktop setting, on its own accord, goes black and changes from 16 to 8 bits,
I then go to settings and change it back to 16 bits -Apply - every time that I log on.
Could someone help me overcome this problem?
Thank You,
In anticipation,

Do you have a systems setup CD supplied with your motherboard / computer, try re-installing your board drivers first-If the CD is not available go to click here to locate the correct drivers OR /AND
Go to control panel, select AUDIO, select HARDWARE, and scroll down to your video settings, from there you should be able to check the video & audio settings in your system,(or you could use BELARC [Free program]to see if there is an update for your system.
