12pin Monitor cable or 15pin monitor cable?

I have got a prob. I have an old Viewsonic monitor which does not have any cable. I have successfully used a 1X pin to 1X pin monitor cable to connect it to the computer itself.

However though I know that one part of the cable was a 12 pin cable, I do not remember what the other side was and I don't remember what the other side was. Now I've been able to get my hands on a 15 pin to 15 pins monitor cable (VGA
cable), can I use it as such, will the 3 excess pins cause any prob?

Any advise welcomed.
