0x80CCC0D Outlook Express error

I have a recurring error with O/E which is driving me round the bend. My e-mail works fine for weeks and then for no apparent reason without any settings having been changed I am unable to open my mail. I have Pipex Broadband with my own domain name using O/E6. I have just upgraded to XP Pro but previously had exactly the same problem with WIN98SE. The precise emessage I receive is "The host 'mailgate.****.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: '***', Server: 'mailgate.****.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D. Can anyone please help me with this? I have tried searching the forum and also querying Google without any luck.

its normally due to Trend Pc-Cillin pop3 scan

Open OE, select tools, accounts and mail, now select properties and then servers tab

Make sure its set correctly, i.e.- pop3.mailgate.com and smtp.mailgate.com

I have checked all the settings, they seem OK, any more ideas?

According to various websites this is all down to the same problem (all list the same error message):

These types of error messages usually result from one of two causes.

(1) Incorrect login or username and/or password.

(2) Incorrect e-mail software settings.

It could be worthwhile rechecking all the settings - could be a case of not seeing the wood for the trees...:-)

In desperation, I made a note a note of all the settings/properties on both e-mail accounts I have, then completely removed them, then re-added them and guess what all my e-mail suddenly reappeared! So I don't know why it worked, but the important thing is that it did! Thanks to both of you for your help.
