My old laptop had this error come up. I figured it was a dodgy hard drive as the error "Hard Error" occured whilst working and it shut itself down.

I bought a new Hard Drive and installed it, thinking I could use the Recovery Disks that came with the laptop to load the OS onto the new Hard Drive.

However, on re-boot CD Rom will not work. Take new Hard Drive out, CD Rom works.......very strange...

Finding no way round this, I bought a new laptop which has Vista Home Premium.

Now....can I connect the new Hard Drive to the new laptop and install the XP OS onto this hard drive?

I cannot think of any other way of getting XP onto the Hard Drive for my old laptop.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

you cannot install XP onto and extenal disk.

You could remove HDD from new laptop fit new HDD and install XP but it would put wrong drivers in.

so next stage is to disable drivers as per click here

fit drive into old laptop hope it boots to safe mode and install drivers for old machine.

Personally I would persist in gettting new drive and CD to working old laptop, check connections jumpers and cables.

Thanks for your help....
