sound cuts out.

up until recently, my amp was connected to my stb via a coax cable.
it was suggested i should change that and use a toslink fibre optic cable in its place, which i did.
the difference in sound is incredible, however there is a problem.

if i am watching an hd tv channel and i happen to either adjust the volume, take the mute off, or simply change to another channel, the sound will cut out.

it will disappear for maybe half a second at a time, but it'll do it 4 or 5 times in a row and then settle.
it will never do this on a sd channel or on a uhf one either.

its annoying but i don't want to go back to the days of the coax coz the sound is too good to do without.

any ideas as to why this is happening?
