Could you tell me if a sky box can be used to view freeview and record. If the dish is disconnected, and the tv aerial plugged into the box?

It is not possible to plug an aerial into a Sky Digibox to receive Freeview channels because the boxes have not been designed this way.

In addition I think the Sky+ function requires a subscription, even the basic one before the record function is enabled. I have read however (cannot remember where) that a one off payment to Sky will re enable recording.

As you have been told you cannot just connect your aerial to the Sky digibox.

Many of the Freeview channels are transmitted by Sky, and can be easily recorded via the scart-out of the digibox to your recorder.

To get the full range of Freeview channels you might consider buying a Freeview receiver. These are not too expensive, and again you record via the scart-out.
