Sim cards

I expect this is a stupid question, but how do I know what sort of sim card my phone has? I thought I'd lost the phone this evening, and having found it under the car seat, thought I'd get a back up device before I lose it properly.

Some of them say they don't do 3G, but do do 2G, some say they are ok for contract but not PAYG. I've got a Nokia, for which I pay a year's rental in advance, and it doesn't connect to the internet. Do I take it that it's a basic sim which will work with any back up device?

Thanks a lot for that. After being patronised by a youth in Carphone Warehouse, I worked out how to back up my Contacts to the PC, using an mp3 cable - cost, nothing!
