Rip from home DVD, Edit then convert to Flash

I am hoping someone can help me as I have spent the last few months trying to do this and still haven't managed to find a simple method.

I have many home DVDs with each consiting of many seperate sections (usually relevent to occasions - eg birthdays, anniversaries) that I want to upload onto my PC so I can edit the various sections, tidy them up, split into smaller sections, add watermarks then save the smaller sections as flash files ready for me to add into my website.

Can anyone PLEASE help me with some user-friendly software that I can utilise to create high quality movie clips on my website?

I would prefer freeware but would be willing to spend a little if the software was worth it.

Hoping someone can help.
