I want to record some tv shows to store and play them on my pc.Do i need to by a PVR or a dvd recorder ? whats the difference between the two ? Is it possible for the channel to use encryption and prevent recording ? or the TV itself ? Yes, so many questions :D One more thing, a friend told me its not possible to record in hd because the recording devices dont have hdmi inputs. Is this true and if yes, what other ways are there to record in hd

How old is your TV? Make and model?

Most modern TVs will record to a USB stick or drive plugged into a USB port on the rear of the TV.

Depending on your operating system you could fit a tv card and record tv that way. Cards are available for desktop or as usb for laptops See

Tv card

Windows media centre

I use an internal card and can burn discs if needed , but a bit slow. Do, check if your windows is capable of having "Windows Media Centre"

PS there are many TV cards; I find Happauge the most prolific; some are HD compatible but for that you may need to connect I to an aerial socket.
