Is it possible to record on a DVD recorder a BBC1 program while watching an ITV1 program.

Yes it should be. Do you have a separate Freeview box connected to your TV? If yes,it is not always possible with certain makes of Freeview boxes: if you record a Freeview digital channel then you can only watch the Freeview channel you are recording. For example, if you were recording BBC1 on Freeview, you could only watch BBC1 on Freeview until the recording had finished. However, you could still watch ITV1 on analogue. Changing the channel on the Freeview box when recording will mean that the DVD recorder recordes you changing channels! Bear in mind that this is not true for all makes of Freeview box.

Are you alluding to
1. PC DVD recorder with TV card
or
2.Set top DVD recorder in the lounge

If 1. the possibly not as you have the one tuner in the PCI/USB device.

If 2 Then yes the recorder has its own tuner[sometimes2] and like a VCR is independent of a TV what ever it is tuned into
