Normally DVD players will play some formats of CD-R.

But the only sure answer needs to be found for looking at the actual DVD players manual, to see what it cab and can't do. There's no overall answer that fits them all.

you need a DVD player that will handle DivX (or Xvid) to play AVI files without conversion.
There are a lot about now as DivX is becoming the MP3 of video.
I got one from Aldi before Xmas for £19.99. Plays any video format.

if your dvd player supports vcd or svcd and you have nero burning rom burn the file to the disc as a vcd alternatively as ashdev says buy a divx player and you will be able to watch the file without conversion.
