Panasonic EX77EB DVD background noise

Help!
I have just bought a Panasonic DMR-EX77EB. The hard drive seems to work perfectly. However when I play DVDs you can hear "background noise", which I have amanged to identify as whatever analogue channel the TV is currently set to. Thought I would be really clever and detach the aerial, but then all I can hear is static and interference.
Does anyone have any ideas???
Thanks,
Suzy-Su

Strange; if I understand you, when you play a recording made on your hard drive there is no problem. You only get the background noise when playing a DVD.

Surely the Scart lead cannot be the problem, as the same Scart lead carries the signal from both the hard disc and DVD to the TV. A faulty lead, I would have thought, should give problems on both.
