Would anyone recommend buying an external hard drive enclosure off of ebay and taking an hard drive out of a computer and making an external Hdd?

Yes, but you could just buy a USB 2 IDE adapter. Not very elegent, but does the job

That's what I did.

Needed a bigger hard disc so bought one and put the old one in an enclosure.

Is this the query?
All HDD with a 100/200/250 etc.,Gb label
show actual as less this is a well known problem of labelling - a drive is described as xx Gb on the assumption to a Gbt is 1000 Mb when in fact it is 1024- so the actual count goes down.

Coming back to the original question - I have both housing[ Caddies] and a USB IDE cable- for multiple drives that I have.

It wasn't a query

Thanks for all help

I bought 2 Icybox enclosures for 2 Freecom Classic XL 500GB hard drives the refused to start, the enclosures came with power supplies and everything needed to convert a drive for external use. Both drives are now working faultlessly and they also appear to run cooler in the enclosures than they did in the original Freecom cases. I know my drives started of as external but they were ordinary IDE hard drives inside the Freecom cases, they wern't even the same make or model, one was a Samsung the other an Hitachi!
