Joining .avi files to play as one

What software do members recommend/use for this and also for editing the original .avi files? That does not cost an arm and a leg, mind you.

FYI my system is XP Home

Windows Movie Maker that comes with XP will let you edit and join AVI files and save the output as DV-AVI or free Virtual Dub will let you join AVI files.

even the easily available Nero will happily do this for starting your>NeroStartSmart> "Make Your Own DVD Video">Add files>and choosing from (what do want to do?)>MOVIE or EDIT Movie option-this will take you directly into the editing window where you can join 2 or more movies together, trim them, add sound etc etc before burning the final product as one...cheers!

This is an excellent cut editor and encoder and will save to most popular video formats. I've been using it for years without any problems.
