HD boxes have recently been promoted though I have not seen one advertised for sale yet,
When they become available and perhaps cheaper
I may indulge, but
Does my TV /Recorder set up have to be 'HD Ready'
or does the 'box' do all that?

Yes your TV need to be HD ready to watch HD channels. Not sure about the recorder.
This will give you some information on HD TV click here

Explains- all
I wont be HD any time soon as the TV is only 18 month young[old].
I guess by the time I am ready to change it will be smelly/feely vision or I will be in my box.
But is does give rise to another quest - so a new string beckons
