Canon 8mm camcorder problem

I have 9 8mm camcorder tapes which I want to put onto DVD. They are quite old circa 1992. My problem is after digging out the old camcorder it will no longer play the tapes..it runs but no picture is seen through the viewfinder, also no picture when trying to record. I have run a head cleaner through the camera to no avail. A friend of my bought an E200 at the same time as bought the e600 (same basic camera) so I tired that (this had also been stored for some time). Exactly the same results as for my camera (tried all tapes with same result). one thing I did notice was that both cameras had a decidedly fishy smell..is there anything I can do to fix this...difficult I know but I thought I'd ask before sending them away to be copied...
