Audio output on LCD TVs eg Panasonic

Our old CRT TV is on its last legs, and needs replacing.

The new LCD TVs now seem to have come of age, but there are comments about less than great sound output from the inbuilt speakers

Currently I have 2:1 active speaker system I use for the TV (driven from the mono headphone socket to standard audio in on the active speakers) and DVD ( 3 way standard audio interconnect : L, R, sub woofer).
I would like to keep this as it avoids the mess of a full 5:1 system or home cinema amplifier.

I wonder if the output from either the phono line out or, less likely, the headphone socket on the TV will allow surround sound emulation, like it does from the inbuilt TV speakers or from the DVD output? Or will it be a simple unmodified stereo output?
The salespeople in the shops don't know the answer.
Anyone out there who has tried this?
I am thinking in particualr f buying a Panasonic TX-32LZD85.

Thanks!

Thanks!

One of my offspring has a new Panasonic 37in plasma and I have a 14-month-old Digifusion set - both have excellent sound using the basic setup, although the offspring uses a 5.1 Denon speakers system.
