You can have XP and Vista on seperate drives if you so wish. You can only run one at a time though. When you start the computer, it will ask you which system you want to start up.
sorry not much help.

Query,is it possible to boot from external drive?

No. click here

You will need to partition the existing drive, or add another second one, and install XP to that.
Then you will find that you have corrupted the boot loader and nothing will start. click here

a lot of work to restore it (there are other ways such as click here )

Is it worth it?

You could try doing this, unplug your Vista OS partition and install XP on a separate drive. Then, plug your original drive back in and use the boot device priority in the BIOS to select the version you want to boot. This way has the advantage of two separate OS installs totally oblivious to each other and all features will work fine.
