In practical terms you will notice no difference unless you are doing 100Gb., hourly backups. Go for the cheapest/easiest.

Firewire B is now avaialble at 800mbs .......but it does cost about 5 to 6 times as much as Firewire A

USB 1.1 allows a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second
Hi-Speed USB (2) allows a maximum transfer rate of faster 480Mbits/second
FireWire allows a maximum transfer rate of 400 Mbits/sec
The new fire wire standard allows a maximum transfer rate of 800 Mbits/sec

All speeds theoretical

In the real world on a dual firewire and usb2 hard drive I found the speeds about the same although firewire hogs less system resources.

USB2 = 480mbps, firewire = 400mbps

However, in real terms you will not get these speeds.

I regularly back up my 25Gb music collection from one PC to another and firewire is much quicker for music and video.

If you have a Google on this subject, you will find that firewire is faster than USB2, and they give you the reasons why.

It also depends on your PC set up and the fact that USB speeds are not maintained at that high rate during any transfer where as firewire is.
