Which is the best graphics card for £100 or less??

  Kingjellybean 16:37 08 Nov 05

I am a keen (but poor) gamer, and my system has started to lag behind the times. I want to upgrade my graphics card but I know little to nothing about what I need. The big game I want to be able to play is 'Battlefield 2' which requires 128mb card in either Nvidia GeForce fx 5700 or above, or an ATI Radeon 8500. I've had a look around and I'm completely confused. My computer is P3, 2.3ghz, 512mb Ram with a broadband connection.

At the moment I have a Nvidia GeForce Mx 4400, and my major concern is that I'm going to be ripped off for something that won't meet my needs.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, I meant to say ATI Radeon 8500 OR HIGHER. Thanks.

Look at Geforce 6800 series, and Radeon X800 series.... these may be stretching your budget a little however, depending on which version. They are the best in the £100ish range

I would also consider another 512mb of RAM.

Should give you some idea as to what is available and prices.Be aware that some of the GeForce6600 Gt cards are power hungry and may not be suitable for your system. My preference would be a 6200 card but ultimately the choice is yours.

If you don't mind refurbished (with 90-day warranty) look at the 9700 Pro, 9800 Pro & 9800 XT click here. For delivery costs, add around £7 to the VAT price. G

nvidia 6600GT every trime

For Battlefield 2 you *must* have at least 1GB of RAM...........So if it was my money I'd be spending it on any of the refurbished cards in Crossbow7's link and another 512MB or even 1GB of RAM.

Whilst a 6600GT is faster than a 9800series ATI card it only really outperforms it at the higher resolutions and when AA/AF are applied.

The specification of your pc means that you are unlikely to be using such high settings so the benefits of a 6600GT will be lost.

Bear in mind that just about any card available/suggested above will outperform your current card by a huge margin (BF2 doesn't even support your mx series).

but I must disagree with you on some points....namely: my pc only has athlon xp2600+ with 6600gt and I use it to play all new games(half life 2, doom 3, farcry ect) on 1280x1024 with AA on at least 4x, plays like a dream, althouh you are right about ram, I've got 1gig. I mean he does have 512 ram now and with 128meg on graphic card that takes it upto eeerrrrr 640, that will play BF2 although maybe without AA I would have thought. And if he gets 6600gt now,(rather than wishing he had) he can always add more ram when finances allow.
