What Ink Jet Printer? October 03

  wint 18:23 21 Oct 03

The time has come to buy a new printer.

PCA review in the latest issue has 3 Canon printers at the top.

I have used Epson printers in the past but wonder about a change to Canon. I do like the idea of separate cartridges for each colour.

What do we think? Anyone bought a new printer recently?

I want to be able to print documents, mainly black but the odd one with clip art, and photographs to a reasonably high quality.

£160 is the most I wish to pay.

I don't want to buy a cheap printer with expensive cartridges as I do quite a lot of printing.

Use compatible cartridges from click here and you will save shedloads. Unless you are printing extremely high quality colour photos there is no need for manufacturer's own kit. For your use I would pay no more than £100 and use the £60 saved for a couple of nights on the razz. I use a three Canons, they are superb and do not suffer when left unused for extended periods. 3 colour inks are the way forward and logically, will save you money in the long run.

I have a Canon i850 which is fantastic. It is now replaced by fitfellas29's recommendation the i865. I also have an Epson and much prefer the Canon, which is fast, quiet and economical to run. Also, as Gandalf has pointed out, the print heads do not seem to be adversely affected if not used for a while (unlike Epson in my experience.)

Personally, I would always use the manufacturers inks and the Canon originals (separate tanks) are pretty cheap anyway, esp. if bought online.

Thanks for the help.

Don't know if you have noticed in the i850 settings, but you can set the printer to turn itself on each time you click on a "Print" Icon from any application, then it will turn itself off again when you have finished! Nice Touch. j.

I didn't notice that setting. I will check it out asap...I guess I've spent so much time gazing at the great prints it produces, that I have forgotten to look at the various additional features. it sounds very useful. Thanks for pointing it out. Wags :)

Looking forward to using it (and receiving it from Dabs!)

The tips from Djohn look useful - any more?

Thanks again.
