Using a second router as a modem

I have a DLINK DIR645 smartbeam router linked to a BT Home Hub 3, the latter acting as a modem. Following DLINK's help to manually set up this configuration they advised me not to disable either the Wireless Network settings or the DHCP server. I had previously been advised to turn off both. From time to time I find some of my wireless devices have switched from DLINK to Home Hub connections of their own accord. Whilst it is nothing more than an inconvenience to change back I am curious to know if disabling the Home Hub's wireless network, its DHCP server or both would be a sensible thing to do?
