Just want to get some opinions on if I should upgrade my current setup or go for a new computer.

Mainly used for gaming, old to latest games.

Budget £1000 - £1200

Current spec -

ASUS Formula blitz | Q6600 b3 @ 2.4ghz | OCZ 2048MB DDR2 PC8800 Gold Edition | WD RAPTOR 76GB & 320gb Hitachi | 512MB XFX HD4850 DDR5 PCI-E | Thermaltake Big Typhoon | XP

That is still a very reasonable spec (although 2gb RAM is now a little low for gaming). I wouldn't bother replacing it for now, performance between Intel Core 2 Quads are very close to the Intel Core i7 in games- while going to AMD would just be a side step.

Intel are planning on bringing out a new generation of chips at the end of this year/ beginning of next. They will be based upon new processor sockets, so buying now would limit your upgrade paths. I am still using an old Intel Core 2 QX9650 and plan to hold out until at least then.

That does seem like a good spec, although you do definately need some more memory in there. If you have the monitor and keyboard already you could just replace the base unit if you do want something a bit more modern. Have a look at click here - they have some good gaming systems.
