Weight for weight, is black toner (apparently more costly than colour counterparts) more valuable than gold?

No - the girl friend still prefers gold not diamonds.

click here for Epson EPL5500 — they also do refills for other brands of printer.

QTY 3 - BOTTLE EPL5500 TONER 150g £35.90

Lay some paper down in a well-ventilated area. Wear a face-mask if you're worried about possibly breathing in carcinogens, or just be very careful not to spill toner all over the place.

Remove the plastic plug from the empty cartidge, and refill it from the bottle using a plastic funnel or a rolled up paper cone.

Replace the plug and shake the cartridge from side to side. Reset the page counter on the printer, and print a few dozen pages on the back of old printouts to settle in the new toner.

The last time I checked, gold was about £320 a troy ounce (31g), so I don't think 100g of toner is getting close to that price, even if you pay £75 for a genunine cartridge.
