..disconnecting file sharers. WiFi encryption poor on average.

Makes sense but people need to be aware of how important wireless security is.

I find it amazing that only 3% are using WPA2. It's also usless to have high encryption if you use a small dictionay password. click here Get a strong password of at least 12 Numerical/Upper & Lowercase password. I live out in the sticks & there are often 2 connection I could link to with no encryption at all!

Just checked my local connections and the four of them are BT Hub's with WPA2. Comes as standard now with BT I think.

Every network within reach of my house is now secured.

This didn't used to be the case, I could often access 2 or 3 networks, but there was a lad arrested after he was caught downloading movies at the bus stop on the main road. He'd been seen at several bus stops along the road downloading from various unsecured networks.

Luckily he was just downloading hollywood films. If he'd been accessing child porn the owner of the network would have had serious trouble proving it wasn't someone in the family accessing the content...

Recent PCA article shows the 'three strikes and you're out' comes in next year. click here
So at least people with unsecured networks will have a chance correct it.

"Get a strong password of at least 12 Numerical/Upper & Lowercase password."

Mine is a random mix of haphazardly typed characters and runs to the maximum 64 characters. The WPA Group Rekey Interval is set short too. I have the SSID set to hidden and MAC address control on in allow mode. Unfortunately I need to accommodate a laptop which does not support WPA2.

Mr Mistoffelees it would take about 4 billion years, or till the end of time to crack your password. According to what I have read my password which is 16 & contains % *"!)(@ etc. would take well over a thousand years to crack using present tech. I think you can sleep soundly knowing your wi-fi is safe. Get a WPA2 dongle.
