Hello,
I have a 4 or 5 year old Dell 2350 and it just cant cope with multi tasking etc. So, my parents have agreed to get me a new PC for christmas and I have a few quesions.
First off I show you two systems that I came up with on the Dell site.

Dimension E520 - €780
Intel® Pentium® D 915 Dual Core Processor (2.80GHz, 800MHz, 2x2MB)
Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
MONITOR Dell™ 17" Value Flat Panel (E177FP)
MEMORY 1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz [2x512] Memory
HARD DRIVE 80GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache plus the 80 gb one I have in my pc.
OPTICAL DRIVE(S) 16x DVD +/- RW Drive edit
GRAPHICS CARD 256MB nVidia® GeForce® 7300 Turbocache graphics card

OR

Dimension E521 - €841

AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 edit
Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only edit
MONITOR Dell™ 19" Value Flat Panel (E197FP)
MEMORY 1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz [2x512] Memory
HARD DRIVE 250GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache plus the 80 gb one I have in my pc.
OPTICAL DRIVE(S)16x DVD +/- RW Drive edit
256MB nVidia® GeForce® 7300 Turbocache graphics card
and
DELL PRINTERS Free - Dell Colour Printer 725
MEDIA DRIVES Internal 13-in-1 Media Card Reader

Which one is better? The E521 comes with a few extras like the media card reader, free printer and the bigger hdd.

I want a powerfull pc that wont need to be replaced for a long while. What would the difference be between the Intel and AMD processors be?

Now, my second question. What would they cost after christmas? Do Dell do good January sales? Would systems this powerfull be decently cheaper?

Any and all comments welcome,

Best regards
Robert

Admittedly, I dont really need the extras the E521 give. Its just the processor, how does it compare to the one mentioned in the E520 one I mentioned.

i am also looking at a new computer a dell looks a good place to go.

looking at cpu do not touch the pentiums cpus
the amd will be faster and not have the heat
problems of the pentium
if you can afford it the new intel dual cores are the best the 6300 or 6400 are considered the best
for price / performance

I didnt know about the heating problems. But think bout it, from what I have seen it makes sense. At internet cafes the pcs are very hot and loud.

For the E521 these are the processos available
AMD® Athlon™ 64 Processor 3800+ [subtract €73]
AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ [Included in Price]
AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ [add €97 or €4/month1]

Twas just looking at the 9200 and here is another set up, sadly more expensive. Again, how does this processor compare to the others mentioned?

Intel® Viiv™ Core™ 2 Duo E6400 Processor (2.13GHz, 1066MHz, 2MB)
Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
MEMORY 1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz [2x512] Memory
HARD DRIVE 320GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache
OPTICAL DRIVE(S)16x DVD +/- RW Drive
GRAPHICS CARD 256MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 Pro PCI Express graphics card
Accessories
DELL PRINTERS Free - Dell Colour Printer 725
MONITOR Dell™ 19" Value Flat Panel (E197FP) edit
SOUND CARDS Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™ ADVANCED HD software (the E520 mentioned above has an Integrated Dolby Digital 7.1 card and the E521 has Integrated 7.1 Channel High Definition Audio)
SPEAKERS Dell™ A225 Stereo Speakers MEDIA DRIVES Internal 13-in-1 Media Card Reader

Now, with all the computers I dont need the screens and with this one I dont need the speakers so eBay could be an option maybe. What do you think. I know all this may sound muddled up but if there is anything unclear please ask.

Thanks
Rob

ps. Am I the only one who thinks there should be an edit post button?

  Bob Bob™ 20:53 25 Nov 06

button. The price of the 9200 in that configuration is €970

  malgall 20:56 25 Nov 06

have you looked at the E520
in the end i think the E520 and the E521
are both good choices the extra for a amd 5000
looks a good buy

  malgall 20:58 25 Nov 06

in the end it comes down to how much to want to pay or can afford

  Bob Bob™ 21:01 25 Nov 06

So you are saying the E521 with the amd dual core 5000.
That brings the price up to €938 with the 19" flat panel going on eBay.

Thanks
Rob

"in the end it comes down to how much to want to pay or can afford"

Ahh, sure let me dream for the moment, then show the parents the price. I may have to chip in a little bit more than expected for this. Ah well,

Unfortunately these are not the exact comparators but have similar specs. Unsurprisingly the AMD performs better in multitasking tests.click here
